My name is Mariam Mwasampeta<\/strong>, and today, as I sit at my backyard enjoying my pre-retirement leave, memories flood my mind, memories of the institution I have called home for four decades.<\/p>\n

Mhh!<\/em> I am filled with gratitude. Not many people are fortunate enough to spend 40 years doing work that shapes not only their own life, but the lives of generations.<\/p>\n

I vividly recall the journey from the very first day I signed my employment letter to the moment I will soon hang up my laboratory coat for the last time. My memory is rich with a story of purpose, growth, and legacy.<\/p>\n

When I first stepped into my workplace in 1984, I was a young woman, newly trained, with dreams far bigger than my salary. For me, what I earned was secondary; my primary goal was to deliver on my assigned duties. This, I must say, is quite different from what I observe today.<\/p>\n

Back then, the number of students was fewer than ten. Today, that number has increased twenty to forty times over. This growth has brought both challenges and opportunities. With increased workload and an often-unmatched growth in resources, it has been patience and passion that kept me going.<\/p>\n

I must acknowledge Mr. Magaya Mwangalimi, who taught me by example gently correcting, guiding, and encouraging me. His quiet confidence became the foundation of my professional journey.<\/p>\n

In the later years of my career, I found myself learning from younger colleagues. They brought fresh ideas and perspectives. Their energy pushed me to adapt and stay relevant in a rapidly changing environment.<\/p>\n

Now, in September 2025, I prepare to retire. But I do so without sadness because I know I have given my time, my mind, and my heart.<\/p>\n

I may be stepping away, but the work continues. The people I trained, the students I inspired, and the systems I helped build they are my living legacy.<\/p>\n

I, Mariam, as I walk into the next chapter of my life with no regrets but only pride, and love.<\/p>\n

To those just starting their careers and those who will soon join me in retirement, my best wishes go with you. You should always remember that; working at a higher learning institution like Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) is not just a job; it is a responsibility to shape the future. Your legacy will not be what you will leave behind, but who you leave behind.<\/p>\n
