Dr. H. E. Nonga

Dr. Nonga H.E. is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Public Health, Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in Tanzania. He was awarded a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and a Master of Veterinary Public Health from Sokoine University of Agriculture in 1999 and 2005, respectively. Dr. Nonga was then awarded a PhD from Norwegian School of Veterinary Science (NVH) in 2011 specializing on Environmental Health.

In his masters’ research work, Dr. Nonga worked on role of chicken in the transmission of thermophilic Campylobacter in humans and environment and, established the genetic relatedness of the Campylobacter isolates from chicken, humans, craws and water. Dr. Nonga’s PhD work focused on environmental health specifically on the “Impact of human activities in selected lake ecosystems in Tanzania and occurrence of microcystins and potential microcystin-producing cyanobacteria”.

Dr. Nonga has over 15 years experience in teaching non degree, undergraduate and postgraduate students at SUA and other universities in Tanzania. He has supervised 2 PhD, 30 master and 50 undergraduate students’ research projects.

Dr. Nonga has 16 years of experience in research and He continues to be an active researcher in the disciplines related to food-borne diseases, zoonosis, environmental and public health. Dr. Nonga has published 62 articles in peer reviewed journals and 26 papers in international and local conference proceedings. Dr. Nonga is also a co-author of a book “Situation Analysis and Recommendations: Antibiotic Use and Resistance in Tanzania”. He has been and is involved in more than 12 research projects and 6 consultancies.

Currently Dr. Nonga serves as Chief Editor for Tanzania Veterinary Journal (TVJ) and a member in various committees and boards within and outside the University. Through collaborations, Dr. Nonga plays an important role in problem-solving researches towards improving livestock industry, public health and environment health in Tanzania.
