Research Interest: My research interest is on (i) transboundary animal diseases that affect livelihood and food security especially foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), peste des petits ruminants (PPR), tilapia lake virus disease (TLVD), infectious bursal disease (IBD) and Newcastle disease (ND); (ii) emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases such as Rift Valley fever (RVF); (iii) pathogen discovery and characterization; (iv) molecular epidemiology; (v) vaccinology, (vi) diagnostics, and (vii) the use of One Health approaches in controlling infectious diseases. My work on FMD has focused on diagnostics, phylogeography, and molecular epidemiology of FMD virus in endemic settings focusing on the development of a tailored vaccine(s) and other appropriate control method(s)/options for FMD in affected areas. My work on IBD has focused on molecular characterization and spatio-temporal distribution of IBD virus strains including vaccinology. My research on transboundary animal diseases has contributed to the understanding of the molecular epidemiology and persistence of FMD, IBD and TLVD in endemic settings in Africa. Furthermore, my work on diagnostics and molecular epidemiology of infectious diseases has contributed to understanding the evolution, transmission dynamics, molecular characteristics and spatio-temporal distribution of emerging and re-emerging pathogens in Africa and globally.

Research Interest: Dr. Makundi has broad research interests in infectious diseases, especially in Bacteriology and Virology. His research interests mainly focus on infectious viral diseases, viral evolution, epidemiology, and disease ecology. He has investigated Feline Foamy virus (FFV), Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and Felis catus gammaherpesvirus 1 and has documented that cross-species transmission occurs naturally between domestic cats and wild cats. Furthermore, he has strong knowledge and interest on endogenous retroviruses (ERVs). Together with his colleagues, he has demonstrated the existence of replication-competent ERVs in domestic cats. In addition to studies on feline viruses, Makundi has investigated several animal pathogens including Leptospira sp. in rodents.
